TIMM RAUTERT
MANHATTAN MIRROR

»We have no need of other worlds. We need mirrors.« Stanis?aw Lem

Under this rubric by Stanislaw Lem from "Solaris" Timm Rautert presents his new works, besides his work MANHATTAN MIRROR, New York, from 2012.
MANHATTAN MIRROR is a compelling installation of 60 black and white photographs and various building materials for high-rise cladding and mirrors. Thematically he is concerned about the invisible catastrophe of the global financial market. In his photographic form of visual appropriation he manages, in the reflections of bank branches, the brands of globally operating companies and the shadow of our bodies, to depict a world that brings us to pause, to reflect. The world we live in, our modern world becomes visible in a special way.
Timm Rautert's new work MIRROR AND GLASS of 2017, shown here for the first time, is formally designed quite differently. Although Rautert's recent tendency towards photographic installations are also taken into account, color photographs refer how art and photography gets consumed in the world. The pictures taken in Vienna, Berlin, Rome, Paris and Lisbon are in a puzzling context with a mirror table designed by Rautert, which is equipped with the most important objects of the photographic, the lenses.
And behind the mirrors, the struggles of art, interpretive sovereignty and power continue, mirrors create a virtual and reversed image, that is just as far behind the mirror as the object in front of it.

EIN HELDENLEBEN
L'ULTIMO PROGRAMMA, CAMPO SANT'ANGELO, VENEZIA

L'ULTIMO PRGRAMMA, CAMPO SANT'ANGELO, VENEZIA (2014) by Timm Rautert negotiates the role of photography as a chronicler of time and the role of the photographer as an ambivalent author figure.
With Venice in Bonn and New York in the Cologne exhibition, Rautert refers to two totally oppositely mythologically charged places. The black and white analogue photographies of the deserted Campo Sant'Angelo show the walls and pavement of a place where time seems to have come to a standstill. The standstill underlying the photographic act is reflected here in the unencumbered depiction of petrified historicity itself. One could almost say that photography, as a chronicler of the time, who seeks to wrest the depicted away from decay and oblivion, would in these pictures themselves be extinguished because what she captures here is just the decay and oblivion in which no momentum seems to exist. An indication of a different temporality is only offered by the attached inscription on the building UniCredit Banca, of which one does not know if it still lives up to its promise. Added are wall texts that accompany the events in the pictures and lead to questions of what is shown.
The texts written by Rautert have been published in a booklet and is a part of the exhibition. The text is about nothing less than the end of the world. Three people are being watched on their way to Campo Sant‘Angelo. There they meet a huge crowd that was attracted, for enigmatic reasons, by the impending end of the world: ".... they would collapse together, in the most beautiful, most humane city in the world and now the sky was like a giant raised wall ... ".
